Depending on the situation you may or may not. The general rule of thumb is if you are moving any plumbing, installing new electrical conduit, or moving any load bearing walls you will need a permit. On average 4-12 weeks is the length of an average kitchen remode.

It is always highly recommended for a number of reasons: First, insurance will not cover you if you are doing the work yourself. Second, contractors are always required to carry insurance so if they don’t have one – run.

Third, you may still want to but depending on the scope of work I would recommend you have someone with you that is familiar. Contractors however will not want to work on a house that has been recently abandoned or run as a DIY. Some might take it but you could be paying triple. R&R Chicago does not accept  DIY projects.

A minimum to expect is 8 weeks for a scope of work that isn’t too complex such as new flooring, cosmetic bathroom upgrades, painting, new cabinets, etc. The average is more closer to 12-16 weeks. Large projects with custom selections could extend to 6 months or more.
